Alright.. it’s been a while since I made a food post from Helsinki! Maybe it’s because so many of our favourite vegan restaurants have since closed and it’s been disheartening. But let’s look at the positive side – there are these places up and going. They are not fully-vegan but offer a great variety of choices and hopefully go vegan someday..! So here’s our list of the best 5 Asian vegan-friendly restaurants in Helsinki!
Make sure to also check out our quick Helsinki vegan travel guide for a list of all vegan-friendly spots in town!
#1 Hills Dumplings
Kalevankatu 17, 00100 Helsinki
Asian fusion ‘comfort-food’ as they call it! Hills offers handmade dumplings, and plenty of plant-based dishes. It’s one of the best restaurants in Helsinki, in our opinion. Excellent service, good vegan choices, great beverages and atmosphere – casual and fun, yet with an upscale vibe. Book that dinner date here. Or come with friends! Reservation is a good idea as they tend to get busy.
We’ve tried both the Vegan Curry dumplings and the Chijeu dumplings – each dish unique and tasty. They have another restaurant in Kallio (Kolmas Linja 6, 00530).
#2 The Saigonese Kitchen & Coffee
Lapinlahdenkatu 21, 00180 Helsinki
A nice little cosy eatery run by a Vietnamese fam, transports you to Saigon for a moment in Helsinki. Almost half their menu is vegan. We’ve tried the bao with grilled soy strips, and their vegan lunch dish of the day, which was a vegan curry served with rice. The portions were good and tasty. The Saigonese also offers good Vietnamese coffee and beverages.
They are open Mon – Sundays and also offer brunch menu on the weekends.
#3 Momotoko
City Centre, Kamppi, Kluuvi and Redi shopping centre, Helsinki
Momotoko is a top ramen restaurant chain in Helsinki, serving up authentic Japanese ramen. We’ve noticed that they now have a whole vegan menu and hope they keep it that way! The vegan Shoyu Katsu and Chili Miso ramen bowl is excellent. We’ve been there a couple of times just for it!
There are lunch bowls on offer on weekdays with a vegan choice for 12,50 EUR. Note: make sure to mention vegan when you order, not to confuse with a vegetarian bowl where they add egg.
#4 MoMo Punavuori
Pursimiehenkatu 8, 00150 Helsinki
MoMo is a cute tiny spot downtown that I’d say is a hidden gem. They are open on a few days of the week, and specialize in handmade ‘momos’, which are the Tibetan style dumplings. I like this Nepalese restaurant not just for the delicious vegan momo plate but the vibe – brings back memories of eating momos in the Himalayas!
The menu is to the point: a choice of momos, 1 vegan option – momos stuffed with tofu and veg, served up in a mild curry sauce. Make sure to try their housemade chili sauce, if you can handle that! You can also get a vegan masala chai – the best.
Check their opening times on Maps or their Facebook page before you go.
#5 Sushibar + Wine
City Centre, Kallio and Freda restaurants in Helsinki
Sushibar + Wine restaurant chain in Helsinki is known for its extensive menu of delicious sushi and Japanese fare. They use fresh ingredients and you can find all plany-based options marked ‘V’ on menu. It may be difficult to choose from the many options they have on lunch and À la Carte. We suggest a combo such as the ‘Greens Set’ 25.90 EUR so you can try a variety of sushi.
