Helsinki has it’s very own vegan food truck serving Thai food, how awesome is that? Thai Vegan Kitchen is a restaurant on wheels delivering delicious, sustainable meals. They just completed their 1 year Anniversary, yay! We have ordered take away food, and often dropped by the truck when craving the flavourful dishes.
Thai Vegan Kitchen is run by our amazing animal activist friend – Prim. I met Prim at a street activism event in Helsinki. Last September she opened her restaurant and we were so glad to have a vegan food truck operating in the centre of Helsinki! We were there on the opening day and I remember all the bomb food we ate that day. We love the satay skewers, the crispy seitan snacks and dip they come along with.
You would find them in the Helsinki central Railway Square in those days. This summer they have mainly been stationed at Vanhakaupunki in Helsinki. During covid times they also delivered food home! In autumn 2020, they are planning to station at Redi shopping centre.
Since they are on wheels, the location is not always fixed and they have different opening times, be sure to check out their web page thaivegankitchen, Instagram @thiitsoob.thiitsoob, Facebook or give them a call before going!
We love the Vanhakaupunki location, surrounded by nature and it becomes somewhat of a food street in summer with other food trucks there too. Sometimes there were long lines, especially at Thai Vegan Kitchen 😉
About the food – it’s authentic Thai! Only difference, it’s all cruelty free. The menu is superb with a variety of dishes including tofu, soy, seitan, Beyond Meat stir fries, soups and Pad thai served along with rice or noodles. I will not attempt to name all the dishes we had but have a look at the photos or their Menu online for info!
We have had the ‘Muu Sate’ soy skewers several times, the Som Tam with spicy papaya salad, Beyond meat phad with noodles and summer special Mango sticky rice! Sometimes we just ordered the day’s special at 9,90€. It’s all very filling and satisfying. Most dishes are very meaty, according to me at least. I would have never eaten the ‘regular versions’ of these dishes anyway so I’m so happy such Thai food is around!
Meet the star behind Thai Vegan Kitchen – chef Prim: she’s a passionate activist and cook who works hard behind the food truck counter. One day we were waiting in a long line to place the order, for more than half an hour and she was single-handedly making all the dishes for everyone, with no breaks. I don’t know how she does it – she’s a star!
They also have a catering service. Contact them for more info: Website
This autumn 2020, you can find them just outside REDI shopping centre in Helsinki. Their all new look:
